In the heart of historic Georgetown, DE, the new Sussex County Family Courthouse stands as both a civic landmark and a compassionate response to community need. The project, with NELSON as AOR, consists of a 110,300-SF courthouse and its adjacent 417-space parking garage, which replace outdated facilities with a modern, trauma-informed environment that supports justice, safety, and healing.
Because Family Courts handle some of the most sensitive and emotionally charged cases—often involving children and juveniles—the design embraces trauma-informed principles to promote comfort and dignity for all who enter. The courthouse’s open, light-filled public spaces offer clear sightlines and calming views of the surrounding neighborhood, while warm colors, natural materials, and extensive wood finishes create an atmosphere of calm and reassurance. Child-friendly waiting areas, remote testimony rooms, and thoughtfully distributed waiting spaces along public corridors enhance privacy and reduce stress for visitors.
Externally, the courthouse draws inspiration from Georgetown’s historic downtown fabric, marrying tradition with contemporary civic design. Richly detailed brickwork, cast-stone accents, and a stately clock tower crowned by an illuminated lantern establish the building as both a beacon of justice and a proud addition to the town’s architectural heritage.
Behind the scenes, security and functionality are seamlessly integrated. The courthouse includes full electronic security systems, controlled circulation paths, and secure holding areas connected directly to courtrooms. With nine courtrooms, mediation suites, and offices for Family Court judges, commissioners, and partner agencies, the facility supports a full spectrum of family court services.
Reflecting both the heritage and humanity of Sussex County, this courthouse embodies NELSON’s commitment to designing spaces that serve justice while fostering compassion, safety, and community connection.
