Where calm design and intentional planning fuel a growing firm's next chapter
For MidCap Financial, a growing firm with ambitious plans, the search for a new Chicago office presented an opportunity to rethink what their workspace could be. They partnered with NELSON Worldwide to design their first custom environment, one shaped entirely around their team’s needs and the firm’s vision for the future.
Spanning nearly 15,000 square feet, NELSON transformed a second-generation space into an environment shaped by its surroundings. Drawing inspiration from the Chicago River, visible just beyond the office windows, the designers curated a palette of calm, neutral tones and a harmonious blend of natural materials that bring a sense of tranquility into the workday.
The focal point of the office is its reimagined café, which now accommodates 30 to 40 people, with prime river views. Custom pocket doors connect adjacent meeting spaces directly to the café, allowing the area to transform for larger gatherings, town halls, and company events. Warmth and sophistication are carried through in the details, from custom wood veneer panels incorporating MidCap’s logo to marble mosaic tiles and built-in storage cabinets in the restrooms.
The result is a workspace that unlocks value for MidCap every day: a purpose-built environment that strengthens collaboration, supports employee wellbeing, and positions the firm for sustainable growth with 50% more seating capacity than their previous office. It stands as a testament to what’s possible when design starts with listening.
