NELSON partnered with Chattahoochee Technical College to design a new Aviation Academy building that supports the school’s Aviation Maintenance Training Technology programs. The facility prepares students to diagnose and repair aircraft power plants and airframes through hands-on training in a real-world environment. The program offers FAA-approved certifications, diplomas, and associate degrees, creating pathways into careers in aviation and strengthening partnerships with local industry leaders.

At the heart of the new facility is a full-scale aircraft hangar, surrounded by specialized labs for airframe, power plant, structural work, composite and bonding processes, as well as paint booths, tool cribs, and secure chemical and equipment storage. These technical spaces are designed to mirror actual aviation maintenance settings, providing immersive learning environments that meet industry standards.

The upper floors of the facility support both academic and student life functions. A two-story lobby with informal gathering areas creates a welcoming entry point for students and faculty. Instructional spaces include classrooms, computer labs, an avionics lab, an upholstery and trim lab, and breakout study areas. The building also houses an administrative suite with a testing lab and FAA file room, supporting academic rigor and operational efficiency.

NELSON’s role encompassed programming, interior design, FF&E coordination, and the development of signage and wayfinding strategies. The result is a purpose-built, future-ready educational environment that blends technical training with academic support and fosters connections between students, faculty, and industry. The Aviation Academy is a vital investment in workforce development and the growing field of aviation maintenance.
