Wind Creek Casino Southland
An immersive, sustainable destination that redefines entertainment and luxury
Wind Creek Southland provides an awe-inspiring gaming experience. NELSON Worldwide designed a destination-quality casino in the south suburbs of Chicago, IL; one capable of standing alongside the country’s leading entertainment environments. NELSON provided interior design, interior architecture, and planning services for the 170,000 SF of gaming floor, adjacent amenities, and back of house spaces, delivering a one-of-a-kind hospitality destination.
Operational complexity played a central role in shaping the design. Casino environments require careful coordination of security, adjacencies, and circulation, all while maintaining a seamless guest experience. In response, the team developed a ceiling strategy that embraces gaming flexibility, allowing the space to function over time with a variety of casino floor layouts. The ceiling also acts as a wayfinding system, guiding circulation through the space and creating a sequence of experiences across the 85,000 SF of gaming floor.
Wind Creek Southland also explores the relationship between digital and physical gaming, extending beyond traditional casino design. Wind Creek’s online platform allows users to earn rewards, including collectible gems, through virtual play. NELSON connected the online experience to the built environment through physical interactive moments that parallel the digital experience. The gems earned in the online gaming app are reinterpreted into an internally illuminated dynamic jewel installation in the Lobby ceiling. Additionally, when jackpots occur on the gaming floor, the casino ceiling illuminates in a light show corresponding with music that reinforces the connection between individual and group play.
NELSON’s partnership with Wind Creek grew from contracted interior design services into a trusted creative relationship. Wind Creek Southland has since set a new benchmark for future properties within their portfolio, elevating expectations around design, experience, and execution. The project demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can unlock lasting value for a client, delivering an immersive and memorable destination that performs as well as it resonates.
