William R. Byars, Jr. Treatment Center
Balancing rigorous security with a transformative recovery environment
The William R. Byars, Jr. Treatment Center is a 24,591-square-foot facility designed for the State of South Carolina and Recovery Solutions to serve juveniles who require specialized care outside of standard detention settings. The central mission of the project was to establish a secure yet normative environment that carefully balances the rigorous, uncompromising requirements of a justice facility with a recovery-focused atmosphere. Navigating multiple sets of jurisdictional standards and a tight, state-dictated budget within a compressed schedule required a highly intentional approach. As Architect of Record, NELSON Worldwide leveraged deep expertise in treatment facilities to provide a comprehensive suite of services, ensuring the design process was streamlined without sacrificing the facility’s core operational or therapeutic goals.
To prioritize resident well-being and staff efficiency, the design relies on proven, evidence-based strategies that elevate traditional correctional standards. A dynamic central activity hub featuring acoustic clouds and multi-purpose areas supports education and group treatment, while color-coded patient corridors in calming blue and purple tones improve wayfinding and enhance the overall healing environment. Functionality and safety are integrated through the use of individual rooms to eliminate multi-occupancy risks and the implementation of anti-ligature elements throughout the space. Recognizing the therapeutic importance of nature, the facility incorporates secure exterior spaces, including gardens and courtyards with dedicated lounge areas. By combining efficient spatial layouts with well-documented color psychology and rigorous risk mitigation, the final facility meets all safety and regulatory objectives, protecting the client’s investment while providing a foundation for meaningful behavioral recovery.
