Summerhill Station
Revitalizing a historic neighborhood surrounding iconic 1996 Olympic stadium
Summerhill Station is part of an ongoing redevelopment of a historic neighborhood located next to the site of the 1996 Olympic stadium. Close to downtown Atlanta, the 80-acre development boasts great visibility and access. Part of a 19-block redevelopment, Summerhill Station is transforming local parking lots and inspiring a once stagnant Georgia Avenue with new retail traffic.
NELSON Worldwide served as both the Design Architect and Architect of Record for the project, overseeing core-and-shell construction for three two-story retail and service buildings, a two-level parking deck, and a Publix grocery store. With the addition of Publix, the Summerhill neighborhood is no longer a food desert, providing the community with access to fresh food and convenient parking.
Summerhill Station supports the city’s greenway expansion efforts including a shopper friendly pedestrian path adjacent to Hank Aaron Drive SW. The combined pedestrian and bike path, planted with native trees and plants provides a calming buffer between pedestrians and a busy thoroughfare. Additionally, the project includes a bioswale in the parking lot along Fraser St SE, reflecting Nelson’s commitment to sustainable design principles. The bioswale collects polluted stormwater runoff, allowing it to soak into the ground and filter out pollutants.
Our thoughtful design approach enhances the neighborhood’s character while supporting its resilience and evolution.
