When Georgia Southwestern State University partnered with NELSON to reimagine the Griffin Bell Golf & Conference Center in Americus, GA, the goal was to create a flexible, community-centered destination that supports economic growth, celebrates local heritage, and fills a critical gap in regional amenities. Located off campus to maximize public access, the new 13,000 SF facility replaces a former community landmark that had fallen into disrepair after years of vacancy. Through early engagement with the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, university leadership, and local stakeholders, the design team identified an opportunity to honor the site’s legacy while delivering a forward-looking resource for both the university and the broader Americus community.

The resulting design thoughtfully balances preservation and progress. Prior to demolition, historically significant architectural elements were salvaged and later integrated into the new building, maintaining a tangible connection to the site’s past. These moments of heritage are paired with a contemporary architectural language that reflects the university’s commitment to innovation and growth.

Programmatically, the facility brings together three distinct yet interconnected components: a conference center, an entrepreneurship center, and a golf pro shop. At its core is a 280-person ballroom that addresses a longstanding need for mid-size event space in the region, supported by breakout rooms, pre-function areas, and a catering kitchen to serve gatherings ranging from conferences to weddings. Complementing the conference center, the Entrepreneurship Center provides a dedicated environment for entrepreneurship and collaboration, utilizing open coworking areas, private offices, and meeting rooms designed to foster innovation and knowledge sharing among students and local business leaders.

The golf pro shop strengthens the relationship between the facility and the adjacent course, enhancing the overall user experience for golfers while supporting university athletics with dedicated team spaces and training amenities. Strategic planning and technical expertise guided key decisions throughout the project, including the transition to a new building solution that optimized budget, performance, and user experience.

Today, the Griffin Bell Conference Center & Golf Pro Shop stands as a vibrant community anchor. It reflects Georgia Southwestern State University’s mission to serve its region through education, outreach, and economic development while creating a place where history, innovation, and community converge.
