Baptist Health South Florida worked with NELSON Worldwide to create the Walsh Family Medical Arts Building (MAB) on the Fishermen’s Community Hospital campus in Marathon, Florida. The project faced supply chain and logistical challenges unique to the Florida Keys, but the design focused on durability and a cohesive look. The MAB provides expanded access to essential services, including chemotherapy, primary care, and physical therapy.

Following Hurricane Irma’s 2017 devastation, which led to the hospital’s temporary closure and long travel for specialty care, NELSON Worldwide implemented disaster-resistant features. These include elevating the site, installing flood barriers, and using impact-resistant windows to withstand Category 5 hurricane winds.

Architecturally, the MAB integrates seamlessly with the main hospital and its coastal setting, reflecting Baptist Health’s brand. The building also improved parking with added capacity and electric vehicle charging stations, and it relocated the chemotherapy department, optimizing space in the main hospital for other services.

The MAB broadens access to vital medical services and underscores Baptist Health South Florida’s dedication to its community.
