We needed to design The Miami Cancer Institute to be the new face for Baptist Health South Florida. The goal was to consolidate all oncological services under one roof for both outpatients and inpatients.
The result is a comprehensive, modern treatment and diagnostic center built around the patient experience. The four-story building is centered around a two-story lobby which directs visitors to the outpatient service areas. Program areas include radiation oncology with six linear accelerators, MRI and CT imaging, proton therapy, hematology oncology, and breast health.
Clinics are configured to enhance staff efficiency and visitor wayfinding. Sixty infusion bays are situated along glass walls to allow peaceful, relaxing views of the lakes and gardens of the campus. Covered terraces open from the infusion bays, allowing patients and families a respite space close to nature and away from the treatment spaces. The complex also includes a connected research building, two parking garages, and a new central energy plant. All buildings are designed to withstand Category 5 hurricanes.
