NELSON Worldwide (formerly CGL), in association with HOK, was selected as part of the Gilbane Design-Build team to provide a new Medical Wing at the existing Manatee County Jail. This project aims to address the overcrowding and insufficient mental health housing in the jail. The new Medical Wing will be located on a single floor for accessibility and future expansion possibilities. The facility will feature an expanded medical clinic and administration area serving the entire jail, equipped with exam rooms, dental facilities, dialysis, and a pharmacy. Additionally, there will be a triage/trauma room and support spaces to meet the facility’s medical needs. The Medical/Mental Health Wing will provide housing for 144 inmates across eight housing units. These units will be organized around a central area with officer and nurse stations, including a negative pressure pod, open bed wards, mental health crisis and step-down units, and an infirmary pod. Suicide watch cells will also be available for continuous observation, and each housing unit will have access to a dedicated recreation yard.
